Farm Walk & Talk

The Agri Aware Farm Walk & Talk series demonstrates the practical elements of modern agriculture to second-level students preparing for their Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science exam.

The Agri Aware team have returned to office after a busy few weeks delivering Farm Walk & Talk events across the country. Across three weeks, teachers and students had the chance to visit various agricultural colleges, and research centres where we facilitated invaluable hands-on learning experiences for senior cycle students.

This series provides students with a rare opportunity to bring the theory of the Ag Science curriculum into the practical environment. From comparing cattle breeds, exploring soil profiles, and witnessing the birth of lambs – by visiting operational farms, they gain insights into the agri-food industry through industry talks with experts and leading academics.

In 2026, Agri Aware was delighted to partner with Teagasc, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, the Irish Farmers Journal and the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) to deliver the series. This initiative supports our shared goal of increasing engagement with Agricultural Science subject at Senior Cycle and to highlight further training and career opportunities that the agri-food sector offers.

We were thrilled to offer this years series to Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science students, and Transition Year students, and thanks to the LOETB the fee for students has been waived.

'Putting the theory into practice'

“Agriculture is hands-on and events like Agri Aware’s Farm Walk & Talk provide thousands of students with an insight into the practicalities of farming and the hard work that farmers do each day. We need the educated students of today to become future industry leaders and to continue to build on our reputation as world-class food producers.

This is why initiatives such as Farm Walk & Talk are of such paramount importance allowing students to experience the various farming techniques that they read so much about and giving them an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a working farm, covering topics from soils and fertilisers to silage making and livestock. In essence, putting the theory they learn in class into practice. The event is particularly beneficial for students who don’t come from a farming background”
